Being Aware of Distractions and Temptations

March 22nd, 2012

We are ALL called. We ALL were created with Purpose and Destiny.

Do you know what you are called to do?

What is Gods call on your life?

1. Lead Worship and take Worship out to the Nations

2. Travel the World bringing the message of Gods Love to the Broken

3. Minister to abused, broken and hurting women.

4. Minister to Youth.

5. Write Worship Songs that not only minister to the Heart of God but lead people straight into His Presence.

6. Adopt

THIS is what I know the call of God on my life is.

Now that you have defined what God’s call on your life is there are a few things to be aware of.

1. DISTRACTION AND TEMPTATION ARE EVERYWHERE

The enemy would like nothing more than to distract you from Gods call on your life.

Do you think the enemy LIKES when you walk in Gods destiny for you?

OF.COURSE.NOT.

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

When you are distracted from Gods Call on your life you are like a walking target for the enemy.

Distractions come in so many forms. It can come in the form of family, friends, your job, even ministry. Be aware.

Keep close to God and His heart and be constantly covering yourself in prayer.

If you begin to feel distractions coming in don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask for prayer.

Make sure you have people covering you in prayer, especially those of you who are in Ministry.

2. The enemy wants to bring discouragement.

A discouraged heart is an easy target as well.

Build yourself up in Gods Joy.

Be in the Word. Be in Worship.

For me, I have been in this place recently. A place of deep discouragement. I called my Pastor who asked me, “Sierra, where do you find your most joy in God?” I said, “Worship”. He then challenged me that if that’s where I find my joy in God why wasn’t I pressing into Worship?

I know that for me when I Worship…God pulls me out of discouragement and I begin to feel Gods love for me as He encourages my Spirit with His Word, His love and His heart for me.

So, BE IN GOD’S WORD.

II Corinthians 4:7-9 – But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Galatians 6:9 – Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Do not let the enemy steal your joy!

As Christians, its easy to fall into temptations, distraction and discouragement. The enemy knows our weaknesses, the things that are easy to distract us with, etc. Be aware. Be watching.

Don’t kid yourself by thinking your exempt.

The devil HATES a Man/Woman of God who is CONFIDENT in their call and walk with God.

Avoid temptation, be aware of things that can distract you and take your focus off of God, and use Gods Word and encourage yourself in the Lord.

I have been listening to the song “You Know Me” by Steffany Frizzel on repeat since late last night.

You can listen to it Here.

This song has been wrecking my heart all last night into today. I was up until 6am just listening to this song for hours and hours.

My mind is officially blown.

I have finally come to the realization that GOD, the CREATOR of the World, the King of all Kings, the Holy One…He loves ME!

Yes its true…God loves me. God KNOWS me.

Have you ever just sat and thought about that?

We are just little humans, people riddled with wounds, and faults, and just human issues…and God finds us worthy of His affection.

I find it totally amazing. When God looks at me He doesn’t see a girl with wounds, or baggage, or a smart mouth or someone who struggles with pride sometimes…He sees me completely different.

He sees me as beautiful and lovely, and talented, anointed, gifted, loveable, and so many other things.

We see ourselves completely different than how God sees us. HE sees us as lovely despite our “stuff”.

It amazes me to no end how great, how big and how wide His love for us is.

He loved us so much He created us in His image! We are created in the image of Almighty God!

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”-Genesis 1:27

God knows the most intimate things there is to know about us. He takes the time to know us.

He doesn’t have to know us so intimately, but He chooses to.

There is War, Christian Persecution, Abortion, Murder and just ALL OUT CHAOS in the world, but He still has time to get to know us!

Blows my mind….

What I learned about Worship-SOURCE- @iSierraNichole

February 10th, 2012

Last night I wrote this on Facebook:

If God took away your talent, your ministry, your gifts, etc would you still love Him? Was reading ‘Crazy Love’ tonight and it made me think. Sometimes it seems like being a “Ministry Christian” is the “hip” thing to do, like wearing scarves with t-shirts. But if God told you to just sit, not do anything but love Him and serve Him from a pew, would you still love Him just the same, regardless? Whew…made me think! God is looking for people who love to love Him, not people who love acting like they love Him.

I have been thinking about this all day today as well. Last May I attended a conference where Kim Walker was speaking. Kim Walker is aWorship Leader I desire to be like…a woman who reeks of LOVE and ADORATION for Jesus when she worships. Kim is humble and leads Worship out of a heart abandoned…I love that!

While at the conference (You can read about it HERE) Kim spoke one morning about how when she first arrived at Bethel God told her  to not tell anyone she could sing. She said it was hard for her and she spent hours crying about it. She talked about how in that time God taught her to just love HIM…not worry about singing and using her gift but to just focus on her and Him.  As she spoke I began to cry in my seat, terrified. What if God asked me to lay down my gift? What if He told me to not sing for a while? Could I handle it? After the session I had a chance to talk to Kim for about 5 minutes or so and she left me with some great wisdom and thoughts.I left that day and told God to do whatever He had to do, if I had to lay down my gift I was willing.

Literally a month later I (somehow) caught what seemed like whooping cough (though the doctors couldn’t figure out exactly what I had). I literally was coughing every 30 seconds for about a month. I tore up my vocal chords and couldn’t sing for about 2 months. Even after the 2 months I had trouble singing, would lose my voice after about 20 inutes and my voice just didn’t sound like it had before I got sick. It wasnt until about a month ago my voice has started sounding like me again.

At first I was a little mad, I was like, “FOR REAL! When I said You could do what You want, I didn’t think You actually would!” God challenged me to learn to just love Him from a seat on the main floor in the Church. So, I did. I showed up every Sunday and sat…worshipping God from my seat, not even being able to sing. Learning to Worship from the INSIDE. It was HARD let me tell you. I have been singing my entire life, so not being able to sing was hard. Here is what I learned in that time:

1. You don’t need your voice to Worship.

-Worship is a CONNECTION with you and God.  Learn to Worship from the inside. Cultivate a Worshipful heart that doesn’t requre you to do anything but sit and be quiet.

2. Worship is not about You.

-We hear this ALL the time, but it is so true. Worship is not about me or you. Worship is all about God. Worship is not about the Leader, the Band, the Church, etc. Worship IS however all about giving HIM all Glory, Honor and Praise just for who HE is, not just what He does for us.

3. Worship should not require a Worship Band or Worship Leader.

-I have learned to Worship God while sitting at my desk at work, riding in my car, or just going through my daily life stuff. Worship is a lifestyle, not just something you do on Sunday mornings. I always say, “Worship on Sunday should be an extension of your Worship throughout the week.”

-I personally LOVE listening to Worship music…Jason Upton and Misty Edwards really help me get lost in His presence, but I have learned to not NEED music to get lost in His presence. Its harder for me, because I love music and honestly music makes finding God easier for me.

-Learn to find God and Worship and Adore Him in the silence. You dont NEED someone to help you get there…it makes it easier when there is a Worship Leader/Band but learn to not need them.

4. Learn to just Be.

-When I wasn’t able to sing God really taught me to just love Him for who He is. Not for what I could do for Him.

As a Worship Leader this was hard for me. I missed being on the stage with the team. But God taught me to just BE. To not worry about DOING, but BEING.

I keep thinking about what seems to be a fad lately with young adults: Ministry. If God took it all away…your ministry opportunities, your talents, your gifts and asked you to go into a season of not serving and just BEING could you and not be offended and fall even more in love with Him? Thats what it comes down to. Loving God for who He is not what you can do for Him. When you are stripped of the “stuff” of Christianity and its just you and God can you love Him even more?

Worship for me is a lifestyle. I was born with music and song in me. I was born with a creative heart. I cultivated a heart to Worship, one that longs to hear the songs and sounds of Heaven. I am in a Worship Band called “The Sound”, and our goal is to lead worship and bring Worship from the throne of Heaven to earth, to sing and play the songs and sounds of Heaven on earth!  That is my hearts cry, to hear the songs of Heaven and sing them.

I long to see Worshipers and Leaders lead out of the OVERFLOW of their love for God, not because they’re talented and gifted. My Pastor, Sean Tymeson, is insanely talented and when He leads Worship the Spirit of God wrecks the place because Pastor Sean has learned to cultivate a heart and lifestyle of Worship. A man who doesn’t lead for a title, fame, or recognition but because He loves God and that’s it!

I desire to lead Worship and not just lead but to be a vessel for the Holy Spirit to work through.

When I saw Kim Walkerlead Worship last summer I enjoyed watching her. She knows how to lead and get lost in His presence! She leads from a heart that has learned to love and adore and worship without sound, without singing, without leading. She learned to cultivate a heart of Worship in the Secret Place and look where God has her now! She leads worship for thousands! She leads thousands into the presence of God…I enjoyed watching her be lost in His Glory. She told me that she learned to worship in the Secret Place, on her own, without music and sound. This past year was a year of learning that for me, I still haven’t mastered it but I desire to!

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you guys!

Evil in music

January 31st, 2012

Many people believe we are in the last days. If this is true, it makes sense why evil is running so rampant in the world. While some evil is blatantly obvious, others are not so obvious. One not so obvious way evil is sneaking into our lives is through music.

Negative messages disguised as catchy tunes are everywhere on the radio and on TV. All you need to do is turn on your radio or watch a music video and depending on your musical tastes you can find yourself singing along without realizing what you’re actually singing. Songs about getting drunk and acting stupid, cheating on your spouse, and being violent are overlooked as the catchy chorus hooks you in.

Let’s take a look at some songs which talk about being drunk and cheating on your spouse and even glorify these themes! I can almost guarantee that once you look at the lyrics you’ll never think of these types of songs the same way again. NOTE: I don’t encourage people under 18 to read these lyrics…

Theme: Drunkeness

Song: Lady Gaga “Marry the Night”

I’m gonna marry the dark
Gonna make love to the stark
I’m a soldier to my own emptiness
I am a winner

Key lyrics which glorify drunkeness:

Then I’ll go down to the bar
But I won’t cry anymore
I hold my whiskey up high
Kiss the bartender twice
I’m a loser…

Secret Sorcery: The Deception Begins by Shawn Patrick Williams is a revelation into one the devil’s oldest tricks- deceiving the world through music. The book also describes how a prayer team can be a powerful force against evil.  Read more about this book at DestinyImage.com

…In this song, Lady Gaga glorifies drunkeness and even admits to the “darkness” she has become a part of and the “emptiness” which that darkness brings. Yet, she’s singing about drunkeness like it’s a great thing and even brags about holding her liquor- “I hold my whiskey up high”

Theme: Cheating on your spouse

Song: Usher “Confessions Part 1″ (Note: I edited one of the words*)

everything that i’ve been doing
is all bad
i got a chick on the side with a crib and a ride
i’ve been telling you so many lies

Key lyrics which glorify drunkeness:

Everytime i was in L.A. i was with my ex-Girlfriend
Evertime you called i told you,
“Baby, I’m workin” (no!)
i was out doin my dirt (oh!)
wasn’t thinkin bout you gettin hurt,
(i) was hand in hand in the beverely center like man
not givin a darn* who sees me

This whole song is basically Usher bragging about cheating on his girlfriend/wife and seems prideful about it. Ironically, even though Usher seems proud of his cheating, he reaps the consequences of his actions in “Confessions: Part Two” (gets the girl he’s cheating with pregnant, his girlfriend/wife no longer wants to be with him)

I have an eye-opening exercise for you to try: write down your top five favorite non-Christian songs and then look up the lyrics. I bet one of them contains at least one lyric which doesn’t exactly glorify God. Some will argue it’s just a song and I think that answer is two-fold: while it’s true a song is just a song, is it really beneficial to fill our minds witch such negativity? I really think it’s a personal decision, just like some people can have a glass of wine while others are recovering alcoholics so it’s best for them to just stay away from alcohol. I also think it’s good to take a look at 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 (NIV):

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

Anguish in the Church

January 18th, 2012

What does it mean to be Anguished?
– excruciating or acute distress, suffering, or pain
– to suffer, feel, or exhibit anguish
- extreme pain or misery; mental or physical torture

Anguish is not a word we hear in the Church. David Wilkerson tackles a topic most churches are afraid of dealing with.

For too long the Church has mirrored the World. We allow sin in our leadership, sin in our congregations and sin in our churches without calling it sin and dealing with it.

Where is the anguish in the Church? Why are Christians staying in their Churches while the world is going to hell? Why are we content with our programs and our little “church lives” and we forget that the world is going to hell?

David Wilkerson calls the Church to rise up! To begin to fast and pray and stop focusing on Christian fluff-the programs, the agendas.  We have to take on the heart of God for the churches, our cities, our families and our world that is going to hell. We need to stop hiding behind the light and fluffy side of Christianity and preach the truth as David Wilkerson does. There IS a HELL, and it is REAL and if Christians don’t step up and do what we were commanded to do, then HELL will be reality for everyone.

As David say, “The hour is getting late and its getting serious. Does it matter to you at all that God’s spiritual Jerusalem, the Church, is now married to the world?”

We are in a critical time in History. Time for Christians to stop playing Church, conference hopping, etc. The Church has gotten so self-centered. We think about how we can grow the Church-but for what reason? So that you have a mega-church with lots of people or is it about making a name for yourself? Its sad when the World looks at the Church and doesn’t see a difference between the world and the Church. Why do you think the world hates Christians? Theres a reason for it.

Why is the Church so obsessed with agends? Where is the weeping at the altar? Where are the mothers and fathers weeping over their lost children? Where are the Pastors anguished over the sheep that leave the Church and join the World?  Where are the Leaders who weep over young adults and teens who are running in the world and are on their way to hell?

We spend hours in front of TV, Social Networks and socializing with our friends….but where is our time in prayer for those who need it?

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Leviticus 19:28

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”

These are all Bible verses people use to prove their point that Tattoos are “not of God”.
Personally, I think God is more worried about whats in your heart than your barbed wire tattoo.
I have a friend who has come out of the “hood”, was in a gang, and has his arms and back loaded with tattoos, many of them are grotesque and carry hidden messages. However, when I asked him if he would get them covered he answered me and said,”No way, this is my testimony”. He has added many tattoos that are about God, his family, wife, son, etc and uses it as a conversation tool to witness about where he has come from to where he is now. I love that! I mean his tattoos are an amazing witness of where God has brought him.
One church called, “New Life Church” in Springfield, CO , has opened its arms and welcomed people with tattoos. Bill Martin, a new member, sports tattoos from his neck to his hands. “It set my mind at ease pretty quickly about being here,” says Martin, “Instead of crucifying people with tattoos, they hang them on a wall.”
Pastor James Griffin says, “There’s been a shift in culture,” says Griffin. “There’s no longer a negative connotation, just artistic expression. … For Christians, it’s a way to express their faith.”
Tattoo artists take art and their creativity and put it on the outside of their body. Gabe Tenneson and Austin Evans, who own a Christian Tattoo Shop called “Transformation Gallery Tattoo” ,(the word transformation being with the letter T in the shape of a cross), say, “Our primary objective here is ministry and to bring art to people,” says Tenneson, a student at Evangel University. “(Tattooing) simply is not a sin. God called me to it.”
“We turn people down all the time,”
says Tenneson, “It’s not about judgment. It’s our discernment.” The owners refuse to do any gang symbols, Satanic, racist or sexual designs. They feel they are called to a ministry and that is in tattoos.
The Bible calls us to love people, regardless. We are called to be in the world but not of it, so who says tattoos are worldly? If I want to get a tattoo of a Bible verse am I being worldly?
Many tattoo artists say that body art “tattoos” are a form of self-espression, a way to say whats on the inside through art. I say, sweet! As I said before, Im pretty sure God is more concerned about your heart than if I have tattoos. I doubt that when I get to heaven, and Jesus sees tattoos on me, that He would send me to hell.
The Bible also talks about not judging people, a lot, so its better to just love people than judge them.
